- Session  in two parts, using old 8" LX200 Classic scope, whilst main 12" LX200R scope has gone back to dealer for electrical repairs.

- Evening session (4.7 hrs), cold & frosty, dew on front lens by end of session despite dew shield and dew heater 
- Session operated in observatory for first hour and then under semi-automated control, with remote monitoring from indoors computer. Problems encountered in last hour with wireless link to observatory laptop failing
- Ambient Temperature:  Initially 0 deg C, falling steadily to -3 deg C  (minimum)
- CCD operation -30 degC (at 66% average cooling).  
- main objectives of the session was to make a successful return to imaging using back up 8" LX200 scope, with primary aim of acquiring images of selected project stars for ongoing photometric and astrometric analysis

IC 65 - Spiral Galaxy & Supernovae 2009mf

IC 65 with SN 2009mf (Andromeda)
SN 2009mf (Type II) was discovered 2009/12/06.750 by Ron Arbour
Magnitude at discovery +16.1 (C)
(Rochester Supernova site | Discovery Image )

Image below (2010-01-18.97) was taken 43 days after discovery.
SN is still just visible

MACSJ0717 - Massive Galaxy Cluster

MACSJ0717 (Gemimi)
MACSJ0717.5+3745 (MACSJ0717 for short) is a 5.4 billion light years from Earth 
and is one of the most complex galaxy clusters ever seen

A well publicised composite Chandra X-ray & HST Optical Image of MACSJ0717 
shows the location of hot gas produced by multiple collisions from four separate galaxy clusters

The Image below taken through 8" LX200 scope shows the 
location of the massive galaxy cluster MACSJ0717 (marked by white square)

Whilst foreground stars (mag +14.4 to mag 17.0) and one very dim foreground galaxy (mag +17.0) 
are visible in the square below, no detail of the MACSJ0717 super cluster itself can be seen
(compare this image with HST Optical Image)

(It hoped to attempt a longer exposure of MACSJ0717 in due course using main 12" LX200R scope)
