Rainbows

Rainbow, Co. Clare Ireland, 1999

Besides the simple bow, which everyone can remember seeing, rainbows can show other interesting things.  The following picture show a rainbow with primary and secondary bows, and well pronounced Alexander's Dark Band above the primary :

Narcesent or Mother of Pearl Clouds

Sunset in NE Scotland on 1996-Feb-16 was accompanied by the beautiful, but rare sight, of Narcesent or Mother of Pearl Clouds.  These produced beautiful multi-colour light effects in the sky for a period of 1-2 hours in the late afternoon/early evening.

I also observed Narcesent clouds in NE Scotland in the late afternoon of 1999-Nov-30. A series of high clouds in the western sky were seen to display alternating rainbow coloured stripes.

Tornados

A mini-tornado was seen whilst on a visit to Co. Clare, Ireland in 1999. It lasted for at least 10 minutes, but wasn't seen to make contact with the ground
